What We Want to Know

When we’re travelling to a new destination as a lesbian couple, there are a few things we take into consideration to figure out how lesbian friendly it is. We like to know what the LGBTQ+ laws are in that country, as well as what the social climate is. In some places the laws and the feelings of the local people don’t necessarily match. We also like to know if there are any “gaybourhoods” or areas that are especially lesbian friendly. This blog series is meant to inform other lesbian travellers about different destinations around the world, and help empower them to travel more openly when it is safe to do so. We will be sharing our experiences in each country as well as our recommendations, but as always we encourage everyone to do their own research. We can only speak to our own experiences, and everyone has a different comfort level when it comes to being out and open while travelling. The travel destinations that an LGBTQ+ person chooses, and the way in which they travel is a very personal decision, and we encourage everyone to only do what feels right to them.

LGBTQ+ Laws

The laws regarding LGBTQ+ people in Luxembourg are very progressive. Same sex sexual activity is legal, and they have had marriage equality since 2015, and same sex domestic partnerships since 2004. Along with marriage equality also came equal rights for adoption and access to family planning for same sex couples. There is discrimination protection in place for LGBTQ+ people, and just this year a law was passed allowing trans individuals to change their legal gender without surgery. Along with other countries in Western Europe, Luxembourg’s laws are among the best in the world!

Social Climate

The public opinion of LGBTQ+ people in Luxembourg is very positive, and there are active LGBT groups that organize social activities and promote equal rights for the community. A Eurobarometer poll in 2015 showed that 75% of people in Luxembourg support same sex marriage, and there is a Pride celebration each year. Luxembourg has also had a gay Prime Minister serving openly since 2013.

Gaybourhoods

Luxembourg is a very small country nestled between France, Belgium, and Germany, and the while the whole country is considered very LGBTQ+ friendly, the gay scene can be found in Luxembourg City. There are a number of gay and gay friendly bars and establishments, the most popular being Bar Rouge. As in most cities, the nightlife is geared toward gay men, but Luxembourg City does have some female events such as Ladylike Lesbian Parties.

Our Experience

We loved our time in Luxembourg! This small country was a destination on a road trip through Western Europe, and it was one of our favourite places that we visited. Similar to other countries in Western Europe, we found Luxembourg to be very welcoming to us as a lesbian couple. We were out and open, and felt accepted by all of the locals. We were met with kindness by everyone we met, and we felt safe being our true selves while in public. We drove through the country but spent most of our time exploring in Luxembourg City. It’s a beautiful place and we would highly recommend it to other lesbian couples or lesbian travellers.
