I'm so glad you've had great experiences! Unfortunately we had a bad experience that wasn't handled well.
All the best!

Thanks so much for sharing, those situations sound incredibly frustrating! It seems like all home exchange sites need to have better policies in place. I believe they are starting to add trip cancellation insurance and things like that, but we'll see!

We have done 3 home exchanges with homeexchange.com. One exchange was with a family from Bend, OR for a week and worked out well. On a second exchange we arrived in Seattle to find our host unresponsive by phone to let us in the home. We got a hotel and days later learned the husband had been admitted to the hospital and they forgot us. No consequences for them. The third time, after arranging a 2 week guest stay in our home, including caring for our pet, another husband had emergency surgery and cancelled with less than 2 weeks notice. This was over the New Year's holiday and we couldn't find an exchanger available at that late date, even though many had been interested in advance. We had to scramble to find friends to feed our cat. The moral is don't exchange unless you can afford a backup hotel if/ when it falls through after you've bought you plane tickets. Also have a last minute backup plan for your pet. Since there is no deposit or consequence for last minute cancellations, you can expect to deal with this at some point. Probably won't renew our membership.
